In the Spring Mist a Procession of Flowers (Haru kasumi hana gyoretsu). Part of a pentatych, mounted continuously with brocade edging. A mock Daimyo Procession proceeding along the shore of Edo (Tokyo) Bay, with courtesans and maikos in place of men. The courtesan on panel (IV) in a sedan chair (kago). Bearers, porters, one on panel (II) carrying a bird cage (wood), others luggage, an umbrella over the kago and standards of traditional Daimyo procession, are all courtesans and maikos. Background of the sea, islands, (one with a little town, back with trees, and a horizon of hills, boats and Fuji) (panel IV).
