Inscribed: ‘Le Chevalier General Avitabile Peshawur reading dispatches from Lahore regarding the revolution. Jany. 20th 1841’. Paolo Crescenzo Martino Avitabile (1791-1850), professional soldier, travelled to Turkey, then to Persia in the service of Fath ‘Ali Shah. After briefly returning to Naples he joined General Ventura and other Europeans in the service of Ranjit Singh, arriving in 1826. He was appointed Military Commandant of Wazirabad and Governor of Peshawar from 1834 to 1843, where he restored order with great severity. Avitabile left India in 1844, visited France and was received by Louis Philippe, and London, where he met the Duke of Wellington and was presented with a sword of honour by Directors of the East India Company, in recognition of his cooperation during the Afghan campaign. He died at Agerola, near Naples, his birthplace, possibly poisoned by a servant.
