Image description

Bas-relief illustrating an earlier life of the Buddha: Vishvantara Jataka. China, Xinjiang, Tumshuq (Toqquz Sarai). End of the 6th beginning of the 7th century. Dryland. Vishvantara Jataka. After offering a Brahman the protective elephant of his kingdom, Vishvantara is banished with his family. During his exile, he divested his chariot, his horse, his two children and his wife for the benefit of various characters. Moved by the extreme generosite of the prince, the devinites will return all his possessions to him before he returns to his subjects. The scene here evokes the moment when the children, in the hands of the beggar Jujaka, are comforted by the appearance of two devinites who have taken the appearance of their parents.
