‘Cape Aiya. Looking North towards Balaklava’. One of 41 coloured lithographs from 'The Seat of War in the East - Second Series', after William Simpson. Published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi. Printed by Day and Son. Steamers and warships can be seen at the entrance to Balaclava Harbour, the principal supply port for the British Army in the Crimean War (1854-1856). However, it proved inadequate for the volume of traffic demanded of it. This problem was exacerbated by a storm on 14 November 1854 that devastated the British fleet lying at anchor there.
