Full dress tunic (shown with medals) worn by Sergeant Robert Turner, Master Gunner, Royal Regiment of Artillery, 1890 circa. Sergeant Turner, a veteran of the Crimean War (1854-1856), served in the Royal Artillery and was awarded not only the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with a gratuity of £10 but also, according to his discharge certificate dated 21 January 1867, he was ‘granted a Medal for Distinguished Service in the Field and a gratuity of £5’. This was despite his having been convicted by Court Martial, leading to imprisonment for three days in June 1851 and a reduction in the rank from corporal to gunner and driver. Turner, who also qualified for the Crimea War Medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman and Sevastopol, and the Turkish Crimea Medal, as well as the Meritorious Service Medal and Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, was to serve later in life as Assistant Master Gunner at Fort Belvedere, Windsor, where he died in 1910 at the age of 89.
