Pair of shoulder chains, 11th King Edward's Own Lancers (Probyn's Horse), 1913 circa. These shoulder chains were part of a dress uniform worn by Major J A C May-Somerville of the regiment. According to legend, officers of the 2nd Punjab Cavalry had sewn lengths of bridle curb chain across their shoulders for added protection during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). This fashion was later adopted by other Indian cavalry units and then by the British cavalry.
