Image description

Lord Raglan’s Quarters before Sebastopol, November 1854. Watercolour and pencil by William Simpson (1823-1899), Crimean War, 1854. The key to the print published after this watercolour indicates Captain Brandling and the tents of his troop of Royal Horse Artillery in the left foreground, with the camp of the heavy cavalry behind them. In the centre of the picture, an ambulance is shown travelling in the direction of General Scarlett’s tents to the right, with the camps of the Third and Fourth Divisions in the distance behind them. The clouds of smoke on the horizon indicate the French Batteries to the far left, and then those of the Russians. The large area of smoke at centre-left marks the English attack and the next puffs of smoke, the Russian White Tower or Malakhov Batteries. Reproduced as Plate 9 in Simpson’s ‘Seat of War in the East’, First Series, published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi, London, 1855.
