Intorno al primo motore boxer (a due cilindri contrapposti) progettato da Martin Stolle, il brillante Max Friz, proveniente dalla Mercedes, costruisce la prima motocicletta di una serie che dura ancor oggi con le stesse eleganti caratteristiche progettuali di base: motore boxer, albero motore disposto longitudinalmente che si prolunga nel cambio in blocco e nella trasmissione finale ad albero. E' la R 32 del 1923. Prodotta in 3095 esemplari costava 2200 marchi ed era la moto più cara al mondo. Questa rara R 42 ne è il logico sviluppo, quattro anni dopo.
