The struggle of the Bulgarian soldier with Islamism, 1912-1913. Propaganda card. This image is from the time of the First Balkan War, during which the united armies of Christian countries as Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Montenegro took on the Muslim Ottoman empire. The dragon in the picture represents Islamism and carries a fez with the emblem of the Ottoman empire. It is wrapped around a pillar with what appears to be a turban on top. The latter has “Status Quo” written on it. The idea is that the soldier fights to change the situation in which lands populated by ethnic Bulgarians and other Christians are under Muslim rule in the Ottoman empire. The soldier has a halo and slays a dragon, a reference to St George, who is also patron saint of the Bulgarian army.
