On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "The little house, R up slope, where John McKibbin was brought up in the 18 eighties-probably born in it. His mother, phenomenally long upper lip and a diminuitive chin like a button. Her attendance with a shawl over her head at old Mr. W A Brearey's funeral (Belmont Ter) about 1889, nearly caused a scandal. Catching sight of that weird Irish type of face, I remarked to others of the staff in our mourning coach, 'Chaps, there's John McKibbin's mother'. One glance sent them into convulsions of laughter. A natural happening after an hours wait in a house of mourning. The released bow string, or the swing of the pendulum."
