Market Hotel, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Outline of the blocked cellar entrance of one of the two tunnel entrances (one flush and one recessed) in the Market Hotel, shewn to Mr. 'Bob' Grindley by Mr. 'Arnie' Hogg the tenant. Also section of the fine handmade spiral staircase serving 1st second and third attic floors as described in Mr. Grindley's article in the 'Times' -q.v. Four stories from ground floor to attics.Section of the fine spiral stairs in the old Market Inn, lying in the cellarage. At rear the outline of one of the two bricked up passages shewn by Arnie Hogg to Bob Grindley (see file) * Had this 20 print about three years before I spotted the door outline on an enlargement as this. Spring of 1938. * In envelope with similar cuttings under the colonials story of Douglas (in the 18 forties) in drawer. Apr. 13th /41. Discovered that the recessed passage entrance was in this photo shewing either a wall of it built up with rounded shore stones or blocked with same at some time."
