Duke Street, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "A sunlight and shadow effect of the old Poor House, (at rear of Clucas' the poulterers in Duke Street.) This was done for an enlargement in dark sepia matt, and was more successful than in gloss(?) as this. As stated on previous items, this old house stood in 1833 out on the shore. And even to-day, there is visible on the N. wall of it, a bulnose, some seven feet above the present ground level, to repel waves driving down the bay. This, earlier, doubtless was continued round the back of the premises - for throwing back waves rolling inshore."
