Thomas Street, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Excepting the bit that passes between the Gas Office and Rooth the butchers into King St., this is all now remaining of what was Thomas St. I have a childish recollection of being taken by my mother down an alley by Thomas St Chapel to the side door (now in Victoria St), which was close to our pew. In earlier days some pretty notable folk resided in Thomas St., the so-called Duke of Norfolk for one. There is an engraving of him. Probably 'a remittance man', he greatly resembled the then Duke, and dressed to fit the part." Additional note: "Old Belle, Wm Christian's housekeeper - the window (her look-out on the passing show) over the watering can. Her Saturday night order at Brearey's - a pinneth a 'Crim-a-Tarta and a pinneth of grun ginga.'"
