On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "No.3 (Mrs Nowell's) & No.2 partly screened by the Customs House. No.4 took up the whole space, this side of the roadway from the Customs House wall to a bit beyond the Left of the view. The front of No.4 came out to the edge of the rubble in the foreground, - no footpath, and the width of the roadway from the front wall of No 4 to the cobbles of the Square was barely 12 feet."
