Demolition on Duke Street, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Shoring-up the gable of a building during demolition in Duke St, Douglas. The result. The old Latin motto, 'Festina Lente', was a good one. Beside bringing down the house on the corner, the hawser pulled loose the gable of the house next door; Halton's Chemist, which was rendered uninhabitable and had to be evacuated. What that bit of undue haste is going to cost the corporation in the finish remains to be seen. Cost of demolitions, all in, came to over £115,000 ........And the cleared space is a white elephant."
