Image description

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "On left, cottages nos 22 and 20 New Bond St. At rear of these, Durie House, no 6 Durie Lane, shewing outlet at back. On R, the entrance to the house-part of the old Grammar School; and between the two windows in the gable, a large sandstone slab. On this, I can remember as far back as about 1880, at the top there was a casque and below a coat of arms; indistinct then, but utterly weather eroded of late years. Remembering having read a reference to it somewhere, I found it in 'Kneale's Guide', and he therein stated that they were the arms of the Dukes of Athol. Kneale was a careful and accredited antiquary, and it was on his authority that I stated no 6 Durie Lane to have been 'loaned' to the fourth Duke of Athol from time to time by the lady owner of the house. It is now (1934) fairly evident that Kneale was wrong, and that the 4th Duke bought Durie House, and found it wouldn't serve; bought the Douglas Hotel, and that didn't serve. See Route 3." Additional notes: "Sandstone Tablet - Atholl Arms, between gable windows. Were they the Atholl arms? Possibly Dickson's Alderman of Dublin City who presented the site for the Grammar School."
