Seneschal Lane, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Looking into one of the quaintest bits of the old town. This view will recur in other than this route. Seneschal Lane ran from Chapel Lane out to St Barnabas' Square, but this off-shoot is part of it; the house on L, with the curved gable being no 4. This curve, and curious roofline, with the cut-away wall of Cain's opposite have been for years a favourite bit for artists; and I have seen nothing more quaint in any of the old towns in Normandy, most of which I have visited at various times. The cut in the wall of Cain's house was essential to enable the passage of a single cart. There are a number of much better pictures of this subject in the series, but this gives the best idea of the cut-out wall. See also S VII/5."
