Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78) writer and philosopher of the age of Enlightenment; after his exile from France as a result of the publication of Emile in 1762 and consequent difficulties he was befriended by the Scottish philosopher, David Hume (1711-76) and came to England where he was offered a home at Wootton in Cheshire by Richard Davenport (1707-71); facsimile from 'Facsimiles of Royal, Historical & Literary Autographs in the Department of Manuscripts', British Museum, 4th series, printed for the Trustees, 1898; Add.MS.29626,f.19.;
