This elderly man has made the enormous journey from the Scottish Highlands to Canada. He sits on the shore of Lake Ontario, thinking of his old home on the shores of Ben Durach in Scotland. Many crofters emigrated from Scotland in the 19th century after landowners turned over large areas to sheep grazing. Thomas Faed exhibited his picture with lines about 'Old Douglas' from the poem 'The Exile's Song' by the Scottish writer Robert Gilfillan. Faed specialised in pictures of Scottish life;
