Image description

A mast from a wrecked ship is being salvaged by villagers on the beach below the Lilburn Tower at Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland. Many voyages ended on the rocky coastline here in storms in the 19th century. Behind the figures, masts of boats show where a narrow gully provides a mooring. The sharp detail and bright colours of the picture reflect influence of Pre-Raphaelite painting. This style was taught by William Bell Scott at the Government School of Design in Newcastle, where Hemy studied in the 1850s;
