Image description

This fine picture was probably partly or wholly painted on the beach at Clovelly, in Devon. Pure bright colour and sharp detail create the effect of light flooding the landscape. These features are characteristic of the landscape style of the Pre-Raphaelite group of artists. Charles Napier Hemy was associated with the group through his teacher, William Bell Scott, who was Master of the Government School of Design in Newcastle. This is one of the first landscapes Hemy painted after leaving the North East;
