built in 1765 by British Colonel Roger Morris and his American wife, Mary Philipse, as a summer home; used by George Washington as his headquarters in 1776 and again in 1790 when he entertained two future Presidents of the United States, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson; known as the Morris-Jumel Mansion after 1810 when the house was purchased by Stephen Jumel; its site made the house suitable as a strategic military headquarters and was occupied by both the American and the British armies during the American War of Independence; illustration from 'American Historic Homes' by Esther Singleton, published in 'Mentor Magazine', February 15, 1915;
