Image description

Masaaki Tonokura, renowned Osaka Concert Master, playing the 'Hibaku violin. ' The violin was pulled from the rubble in Hiroshima after the city was destroyed by an atomic bomb on August 6th, 1945. The Hibaku (atomic bomb survivor in Japanese) violin was played by Serge Palchikoff, who escaped from the Russian Revolution and defected to Japan. He taught music at Hiroshima Jogakuin before World War I. His family donated the violin to the school and the violin manufacturer Takashi Ishii repaired it completely in 2012.
