William Shaw's pump, in cast iron, at Dotheboys Hall, Bowes, on Yorkshire moors, now in Co. Durham. The building was William Shaw's Academy, one of several schools in the area offering tuition 'without holidays' to unwanted children, often from London. Novelist Charles Dickens made a special visit through thick snow in February 1838, and denounced the cruelty and appalling conditions in his novel Nicholas Nickleby, carefully naming the headmaster 'Wackford Squeers'. The pump froze over after Nickleby arrived, precluding washing for that day.
