Jean Bart (1651-1702), Flemish sailor, served the French crown as naval commander and privateer. After a drawing by A Bouchette. Illustrates well known incident when Bart noticed his son turned pale as round-shot (ammunition) whistled through the rigging and the father ordered him to be lashed to the mast. Son was aged 14. From The Corsairs of France by C B Norman. London 1887.
