'Rescued from the Plague, London, 1665'. The painting was inspired by Samuel Pepys' diary entry for 3rd September, 1665, in which he tells the story of a saddler and his wife who, having lost all of their other children to the plague, gave their last surviving child away in the hope of saving the child's life. After the 1898 original by Frank William Warwick Topham, British artist, 1838 - 1924. Taken from Cassell's History of England vol. iii, published by Cassell & Co Ltd, to face p. 192.
