After five months of siege during the Palatinate Campaign of the Thirty Years' War, the Spanish army under Ambrosio Spinola (1569-1630) took the Dutch-occupied fortress of Jülich on 3rd February 1622. Here General Ambrosio de Spinola receives the keys of the Rhenish city from its governor, Frederick Pithan. Part of the Thirty Years war, at the end of the Eighty years war, an armed revolt under the leadership of Protestant William of Orange when the Dutch struggled to gain independence from Spanish rule under the Catholic Philip II.
