Rome, Lazio, Italy The painter and drawer Adolf Oberlaender is a guest of the Villa Massimo, which was established in 1910 as the 'German Academy' in Rome by Eduard Arnold. The academy was overseen by the Prussian Cultural Ministry which made it available for free for nine months to the holders of Prussian state awards in various fields of the fine arts. On this photo, Oberlaender and his wife are preparing their meal. The wife can only be in the building during the day. The house rules of the Academy forbid wives of the artists to spend the night.
