Worcester teapot and cover, c.1770 (porcelain)

Circa 1770, blue crossed swords and 9. mark, decorated in the atelier of James Giles In the Sèvres style, the domed cover with gilt floral finial flanked by panels enclosing either a green camaïeu and black ribbon-tied swag or a polychrome floral spray between two blue bands enriched with paired gilt dash ornament, the oviform body with ridged spout and entwined branch handle, finely painted with a landscape vignette after Teniers of a peasant seated on a bench holding a pipe and a glass of ale, his companion with a basket of flowers within a gilt heart-shaped surround, the reverse with a similarly shaped panel painted with a brightly plumed exotic bird perched among berried branches above a cluster of fruit, the shoulder with a quatrefoil panel enclosing a single flower and an oval panel enclosing a spray of auriculas, beneath the spout is a red and yellow scale cartouche and beneath the handle is a Japanese style radiating oval medallion or mons in red, green and blue
