Scott, John Ship portraits, like this view of the brig 'Margaret', were often commissioned by shipbuilders and owners. Brigs were often used for transporting coal down the coast from the River Tyne. The buoy in the scene might be the Herd Buoy, which marked the treacherous Herd Sands, near the entrance to the Tyne. John Scott was one of the North East's best known painters of sea scenes. He specialised in ship portraits.
