The famous Marsden Rock is central, and behind it on the headland is the outline of Souter Lighthouse. The artist has built up the image using many layers or washes of watercolour paint. Also, by adding less water to the paint in some areas, the colour appears more solid. James Miller Brown was a landscape and coastal painter in oil and watercolour. He worked at South Shields, and briefly at Newcastle, during the late 19th / early 20th centuries.
