In the distance on the right is the headland at Tynemouth, with the Priory ruins. The artist has studied the building very closely, and is careful to record its features accurately, but has paid equal attention to the landscape and background. James Henry Cleet was a talented amateur painter and professional photographer in his home town of South Shields. His photographs and paintings create an invaluable record of Tyneside at a time when it was undergoing rapid change.
