Image description

This open-air painting of light on snow draws on a tradition popularised by French Impressionist artists. Their studies revealed the real colours of shadows, like the blue patches that dapple the ground in this view. David Robertson has contrasted the brightness of the snow with the dull white of the winter sky. He was a Sunderland artist who concentrated on scenes of animals in landscapes.
