Image description

People are clambering on the stern half of a ship, which has been broken in two in a wreck. Rocks known as the Black Middens made the approach to Tynemouth and Shields Harbour very dangerous. The picture is sketched on slightly brown paper, which the artist has used for the colours of the rocks. He has used opaque white watercolour to pick out highlights such as the clouds and the guardrail of the ship. Thomas Miles Richardson, Senior was the leading Newcastle landscape painter at this time.
