This view shows the semi-ruined condition of Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland, in the 18th century. Robert Johnson almost certainly made his careful outline drawing of the castle on the spot. Grey washes were then added on the walls of castle and the ruins surrounding it. The energetic sketch of the two racing horses was done with a fine brush, and was probably added in the studio to give liveliness to the scene. Robert Johnson was taught by the North East wood-engraver and artist Thomas Bewick, who admired Johnson's abilities as a watercolour artist.
