Image description

This view shows the Swing Bridge, which opened in 1876. It replaced the old Tyne Bridge. It was designed and built by William Armstrong's engineering company at a cost of £222,000. It swings round on a central pier in the river, allowing large ships to pass. Better access up the river helped the growth of shipbuilding and engineering works at Elswick (some owned by Armstrong). Brown drew this illustration for 'The Graphic' magazine in London. He also worked for the 'Newcastle Weekly Chronicle'.
