Several fishing boats are shown passing Tynemouth Bar in this scene. The entrance to the River Tyne and the ruins of Tynemouth Priory are visible in the background. The bar is the mound of sand that the action of the tide leaves offshore from the mouth of the river, creating rough water in that area. The larger two-masted ship in the background is the kind of ship that was often used to carry coal. Samuel Calvert was a North-East artist who specialised in seascapes.
