This painting shows the village of Redbridge, Southampton, with the bridge which gave it its name. It is located at the mouth of the River Test, which leads into The Solent. During the 18th and 19th centuries this location meant Redbridge was a major trading post and shipbuilding centre. The stone bridge was built in 1793 and is still visible today, but has been largely replaced by the modern Redbridge Causeway, built alongside it. This painting was at one time in the collection of the Australian liner HMS Ophir.
