Image description

A steam paddle tug is shown towing a ship up the River Tyne at North Shields. Without tugs, large sailing ships would not have been able to travel up to the port of Newcastle. In background is the black shape of the naval training ship 'Wellesley', which was stationed at North Shields. This was a school for boys to train them for work on ships. Behind her is a naval warship. The artist Bernard Benedict Hemy lived at Shields for much of his career.
