Sewn by English women probably in Kent to a Norman brief, the embroidery illustrates the events leading to the Norman invasion and conquest of England by an army led by Duke William of Normandy and the death of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Duke William listens to Harold in the Great Hall of his castle at Rouen, Ælfgyva is seen with a priest and William, with Harold, leads an army against Duke Conan of Brittany who has declared war on him. They pass Mont Saint-Michel and get stuck in the mud of the river Couesnon where Harold bravely rescues soliders
