The Pre-Adamite Earth', 1849. Engraving by John Emslie after his original drawing, showing illustrations of the various mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, trees and plants which existed in different epochs prior to the Creation of Man. Ideas of a 'Pre-Adamite Earth' first emerged in the early 19th century, and refer to passages in Genesis which suggest that prior to Adam and Eve an entire Pre-Adamic world existed, complete with plants, animals, and possibly even pre-Adamic races of people.
