Sir William Augustus Tilden, English chemist, c 1910s. Signed portrait photograph of the English chemist Sir William Augustus Tilden (1842-1926). Tilden was Professor at the Royal College of Science in London from 1894-1909. He is best remembered for making the manufacture of artificial rubber possible by his synthetic preparation of isoprene. He served as President for the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1888, the Institute of Chemistry (GBI), 1891-1894, and was Vice President of the Royal Society, 1904-1906. ©SSPL/Science Museum
