Image description

Sir Charles William Pasley, Scottish military engineer, 1854-1866. Studio portrait photograph by Maull and Polyblank of Sir Charles William Pasley (1780-1861). Pasley served for over 50 years in the British Army, introducing a course in military engineering for non-commissioned military officers while in command of the Plymouth Company of military artificers in 1811. This course developed into the School of Military Engineering at Chatham, Derbyshire, where Pasley was director from 1812-41, before being appointed Inspector General of Railways. Pasley produced a number of pamphlets and instruction courses on telegraphing, mining, and the uses of gunpowder on land and under water. However, he is probably best known for his book 'Limes, Calcareous Cements, Mortar, Stuccos and Concretes'. He was made a general in 1860. Dimensions: 200mm x 150mm. ©SSPL/Science Museum
