Searchers for missing scouts, Snake Pass, Derbyshire, March 1964. Police and searchers look for missing scouts during the Four Inns Walk, a tough competitive walk in the Peak District, approximately 72km (45 miles) long, over some of the roughest moorland in Britain. The Walk takes its name from four pubs along the route. At the time, the RAF were the only mountain rescue team. The other rescuers were made up of police and volunteers - mainly Rover Scouts. Three scouts died of exposure and exhaustion on the 1964 event, after which the rules of the Walk were changed: participants had to be suitably dressed for the conditions, and keep in teams of four. Another consequence of the tragedy was the formation of the Peak District Mountain Rescue organization. ©SSPL/Manchester Daily Express
