The group gathered to demand Chinese President Jiang Zemin cut short his visit to Japan after Japan offered only a verbal apology over World War Two during Jiang's visit to the country. The failure of Tokyo and Beijing to bridge the divide over Japan's wartime actions has reinforced opposition on both sides and dragged the focus of ties firmly into the past, analysts said.
