Image description

Prince Albert, Consort of Queen Victoria, 1855. Parian ware bust manufactured by Brown Westhead Moore Co after the original marble bust of 1855 by Joseph Durham RA. This is one of a pair of busts of Prince Albert (1819-1861) and his wife, Queen Victoria (1819-1901). Albert, son of the Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha, Germany, married his first cousin, Victoria, in 1840 and was given the title of Prince Consort in 1857. He is largely remembered for his patronage of the arts (including the Great Exhibition of 1851) and his encouragement of social and industrial reforms. Parian ware porcelain was introduced in about 1840 by the English firm of Copeland & Garrett, in imitation of Sevres biscuit, and became a popular Victorian medium. Its name is derived from its resemblance to Parian marble. ©SSPL/Science Museum
