Image description

The Birtley Belgians were Belgians recruited by the British during WWI to man a munitions plant in Birtley (in what is now Gateshead). The factory was staffed entirely by Belgian workers and managers. This album of photographs dating from June 1916, shortly after the factory became operational, were taken by Sir W.G. Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd, who built the factory and nearby village of Elisabethville to house the new workforce.
