Image description

New Zealand pilots Mat Wakelin (R) and Rob Mackley wave to Indian airport ground officials in Calcutta on March 24, 2001, shortly after touching down in the eastern Indian city. The two were on a stopover while participating in the London to Sydney "Great Air Race". The gruelling 28-day, 14,000-mile (22,500-km) race, which began in Biggin Hill in southeast England, recreates the pioneering days of aviation history by following the same route as the first flight from England to Australia in 1919.
