Necklace with a small portrait of a man, mid-late 19th century. Photographic portrait of a formally dressed man. The gold frame encasing the daguerreotype image includes a decorative engraved motif. The frame is attached to three lengths of cord woven from human hair. The jewellery may have been worn as a choker, and may have been a gift from husband to wife, or was possibly mourning jewellery. Photographic jewellery quickly became popular in the early days of photography as a decorative and personal way to display pictures of loved ones.
