Image description

Lens polisher, Taylor-Hobson, 1953. A polisher adjusts a rotary polisher and jig. The lens is fixed to a spherical base and a rotating top attached which polishes it . A range of lenses can be polished using the variety of discs which are stored on the rack in front of him. Innovation and consistent technical quality lead to Taylor-Hobson becoming one of the world's most popular lens producers. During the 1930s and 1940s nearly 80% of all Hollywood films had been shot with a Taylor-Hobson lens. Their lenses were also favourites of the 16mm and home movie markets. Photograph by Walter Nurnberg (1907-1991), who transformed industrial photography after WWII by using film studio lighting techniques. Photographie ©SSPL/NMeM/Walter Nurnberg
